Translation of specialist texts
What is a specialist translator?
Everybody knows what a translator does… or do we mean an interpreter? It doesn’t matter – as long as he just translates what he is given! And as long as he can speak both languages. It can’t be that difficult. It’s just a bit of English. I could probably do that myself… That is what a lot of people think.
However, it is NOT that easy: Without deep expertise on the subject in question, no translator or interpreter is able to translate well from one language into another. This is, of course, even more difficult in the case of a specialist (e.g. technical, legal etc.) text. In order to be able to put an official stamp on a translation, the translator must first be certified by the responsible authorities. Certification, however, is only awarded to a translator/interpreter who can prove that he/she has sufficient knowledge of German civil and criminal law. A technical specialist translator can only translate into another language, if he/she understands the context and has a general overview of how everything links up. To deliver excellent results, the translator must not only have a fundamental understanding of technical topics but also very specific technical knowledge.
